Albani Bryggerierne was founded in 1859 by the resourceful pharmacist Theodor Schiøtz in Odense on the Danish island of Funen, laying the foundation for the industry of Denmark's third largest city, with the company still standing on the same site as it did over 165 years ago. Schiøtz himself served as brewery inspector, developed the technical plans and ensured that everything ran smoothly in the brewhouse – a pioneering spirit to which a monument in Odense is dedicated to this day, and which soon brought the brewery to the favour of none other than Hans Christian Andersen, who in a preserved letter enthused about the freshness, the robust flavour and the delicate elegance of Albani's beer.

Thanks to the flourishing business, the brewery was able to expand generously and invest in the most modern technology less than 15 years after its opening, acquiring a number of smaller rural breweries and a mineral water factory over the course of the following century and developing into the undisputed brewing house of the island of Funen. Among its best-known products are the Odense Pilsener, brewed since 1934 and regarded as Funen's most beloved pilsner, as well as the Odense Classic and the traditional Påskebryg, the brewery's Danish Easter beer, which was introduced in the 1950s.

In 2000, Albani merged with Bryggerigruppen, now known as Royal Unibrew, and has since remained an active and independent brand within Denmark's second largest brewing group. Today, alongside its classic pilsners, Albani has also made a name for itself in the international craft beer scene with more modern creations such as the Albani Mosaic IPA, and stands as a living symbol of over 165 years of brewing tradition and the unmistakable character of the island of Funen.
