Cecilia Gluten Free comes from Pivovar Rohozec in Malý Rohozec near Turnov in the picturesque Bohemian Paradise – one of the most fascinating and traditional breweries in northern Bohemia, whose history dates back to 1850. The brewery was founded by Ferdinand Xaver Unger, a wealthy glass merchant who, after acquiring the Malý Rohozec estate from Prince Rohan, quickly recognised that his own brewery on the estate would not only make sense but would be enormously lucrative. The building permit was granted in 1847, but Unger did not live to see the ceremonial opening in 1850 – he died shortly before of a typhus epidemic. His son Karel Unger took over the brewery and ran it with great success, which even earned him a noble title, before the estate passed in 1910 to a cooperative of innkeepers from the surrounding region.
After nationalisation in 1948 and a long period under state administration – first as part of the North Bohemian Breweries, later the East Bohemian Breweries headquartered in Hradec Králové – Pivovar Rohozec was privatised in 1994. Poor economic management brought the brewery to the brink of ruin, however, until the new joint-stock company PIVOVAR ROHOZEC, a.s. was founded on 1 July 2004, which since then has invested substantially in quality and equipment while consistently preserving the traditional brewing methods. Today the Rohozec brewery produces its beers in the time-honoured manner – with Žatec červeňák hops, Bohemian Pilsner malt from the immediate surroundings and water from its own springs in the Vazovecké valley – and has earned an excellent reputation with a string of awards at Czech and international beer tastings.
Cecilia is the gluten-free flagship of Pivovar Rohozec – a fully authentic Czech eleven-degree lager developed according to the original recipe of the beloved predecessor beer Celia, carrying its tradition and characteristic flavour profile forward in a completely convincing manner.
