The story of Cruzcampo begins in 1904 in Seville, when brothers Tomás and Roberto Osborne Guezala – members of the well-known Andalusian business family Osborne – founded the first large brewery in the Andalusian capital on a site known as «Cruz del Campo», named after a nearby wayside cross venerated in a small chapel, thereby laying the foundation for one of the most significant and characterful beers in Spain. The name Cruzcampo – «the cross of the field» – has remained with the brand to this day and recalls the deeply Sevillian roots of a brewery that was from the very beginning inseparably linked with the identity, the spirit and the hospitality of Andalusia. In 1926, the legendary beer king Gambrinus was chosen as the official brand logo – a mythical figure symbolising the passion for beer and the joy of life, who has since adorned every Cruzcampo bottle as an unmistakable emblem.
Over the following decades, Cruzcampo grew into Spain's best-selling draught beer brand and the undisputed symbol of southern Spanish beer enjoyment, before the brewery was acquired by the British Guinness group in 1990 and ultimately fully integrated into the Heineken group in 2000, which today operates as Heineken España S.A. with its headquarters in Seville as the operational heart of the Spanish market. Despite this international integration, the character of Cruzcampo remained unmistakably Andalusian – a pale, cleanly filtered and crisp fresh pilsner-style lager at 4.8% ABV, brewed from barley malt, hops, maize, water and the proprietary Cruzcampo yeast, unpasteurised and cold-filtered to preserve its characteristic Mediterranean freshness.
With the opening of the Factoría Cruzcampo in 2021 – a modern brewery visitor centre on the historic original site of the founders in Seville – Cruzcampo underlines its commitment to history, community and innovation while creating a vibrant meeting point for beer lovers from around the world who wish to look behind the scenes of a brewery that has been bottling the Sevillian and Andalusian spirit of life for over 120 years like no other.
