The history of Salva Vida began in 1902, when the American banana company Standard Fruit and Steamship Company – known as Vaccaro Bros. – founded the Compañía Industrial Ceibeña in La Ceiba on the Honduran Caribbean coast, which alongside the production of electricity, drinking water and ice also received the concession to manufacture beer. In 1916, the Compañía Industrial Ceibeña brought its first beer brand to market and named it Salva Vida – meaning «lifesaver» in English – a name that according to tradition traces back to the founding families Salvatore Vaccaro and Vicente D'Antoni, characterising the beer as a lifesaver for the thirsty workers and sailors of the thriving banana ports of the Caribbean north. This made Salva Vida not only the first commercially brewed beer in Honduras, but also an immediate child of the banana boom era that would permanently shape the country and its northern coast.
Over the following decades the company grew steadily and merged in 1960 to form Cervecería Hondureña S.A. in San Pedro Sula, which today as part of the world's largest brewing group AB InBev stands as a central pillar of the Honduran economy, accounting for over 3% of the national gross domestic product and around 18% of the country's manufacturing sector. With the slogan «Orgullo que nos une desde 1916» – Pride that unites us since 1916 – Salva Vida is far more than a beer: it is the undisputed national beer of Honduras, omnipresent at football matches, festivals, family gatherings and the social moments of everyday life in a country that reveres it as a genuine piece of national identity.
The Salva Vida Lager presents itself golden and clear at 4.8% ABV with a balanced flavour profile that is neither too sweet nor too bitter, featuring subtle corn and malt notes, a gentle citrus hint and a pleasantly crisp, clean finish that makes it the ideal and undemanding thirst quencher under the Caribbean sun.
