T&R Theakston

T&R Theakston is an independent, family-run brewery founded in 1827 by Robert Theakston and John Wood at the Black Bull pub in the picturesque market town of Masham in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, and has since grown into one of the most traditional and renowned breweries in England. Now approaching its 200th anniversary, the business has been passed down through six generations of the Theakston family, with direct descendants of founder Robert Theakston still at the helm today.

With an unwavering commitment to traditional brewing craftsmanship, the finest ingredients and artisanal quality, Theakston is the second largest family-owned brewery in Great Britain after Shepherd Neame and is celebrated worldwide for its legendary Old Peculier Ale, brewed since the 1890s and widely regarded as one of the most iconic beers in the world. The brewery employs one of the last remaining full-time coopers in the country, who hand-crafts oak casks for the Old Peculier beer, impressively underlining the unique connection between centuries-old craftsmanship and living brewing tradition at Theakston.

The brewery's eventful history encompasses takeovers, family disputes and ultimately a triumphant buyback by the family in 2003, when four Theakston brothers repurchased the majority shareholding from Scottish & Newcastle and brought the brewery back into family hands. Today, Theakston stands at the forefront of the British craft beer revival, offering alongside its classic cask ales a broad range of handcrafted premium beers for the domestic market and numerous export countries around the world.
